Qingzhou lies where the Shandong plain meets the first low hills to the south, and its map reflects both. A historic old town with a compact grid of lanes sits near the river that crosses the city. Qingzhou takes its name from one of the Nine Provinces of ancient China, and for centuries it was an important regional centre. It is known for the Buddhist statues found at the site of Longxing Temple in 1996, a major archaeological discovery. It is also known for Yunmen Mountain, where a giant carving of the character for longevity overlooks the city.
