Quarteira Map Poster & Print
Quarteira is on the Algarve coast of southern Portugal, in the municipality of Loulé. It began as a fishing village and grew into a resort town in the second half of the twentieth century. A fish market and fishing boats still work beside the beaches, and the neighbouring resort of Vilamoura, with its large marina, begins just to the west.
From above, the town is shaped by its shoreline. A long seafront promenade runs parallel to the beach, apartment blocks rise in tight rows behind it, and the older fishermen's quarter keeps a denser, smaller grain. Breakwaters jut into the Atlantic at regular intervals and draw short, precise lines along the coast.
