Quimper lies in Finistère, in the west of Brittany, where the Steir flows into the Odet. The city's name comes from the Breton word for confluence. The historic centre sits on the north bank of the Odet, a compact area of narrow streets around the cathedral, with the rivers forming its southern and western edges.
The Odet runs through the city in a straight, channelled course, crossed by many small footbridges often decorated with flowers. Directly south of the river rises Mont Frugy, a steep wooded hill that appears on the map as a wide, empty space. Beyond the centre, residential districts spread over the surrounding slopes.
The Gothic Cathedral of Saint-Corentin, with its twin spires, dominates the old town. Quimper is also known for its hand-painted faience pottery, produced here for centuries. A Quimper map poster captures the close relationship between the city's rivers, its hill and its medieval centre.
