Quipapá is a municipality in the south of Pernambuco, in the region known as the Zona da Mata, where the Atlantic Forest once stood and sugarcane has been farmed for centuries. The town sits on uneven ground, and its streets follow the lie of the land, bending around slopes rather than keeping to a strict grid.
From above, the urban area is compact, with a central cluster of streets and a few roads leaving it through rolling country. Fields and patches of remaining forest surround the town on all sides. It is a landscape shaped by agriculture and by small rivers winding through the hills.
