R.S. Pora, short for Ranbir Singh Pura, lies on the level plains southwest of Jammu, close to the international border with Pakistan. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets and bazaars. Roads radiate from it across a landscape that is almost completely flat and divided into small, regular fields.
Irrigation canals and drains cross the countryside in long, straight lines, and the field boundaries between them create one of the most finely structured patterns a map can show. On a poster this surrounding mesh frames the town centre and gives the whole composition a quiet quality, close to that of woven cloth.
The area is widely known for its basmati rice, which is grown in the surrounding fields and valued across India. The town takes its name from Maharaja Ranbir Singh, a nineteenth-century ruler of Jammu and Kashmir. An R.S.
