Rāmachandrapuram lies in the Godavari delta of coastal Andhra Pradesh, one of the most intensively farmed regions in India. From above, the land is completely flat. The town forms a compact cluster of streets, and irrigation canals and roads run out from it across wide paddy fields.
The delta's canal network was built in the nineteenth century, when the Godavari was dammed upstream, and it still shapes the landscape. Around the town, waterways and field boundaries cross in long lines, with villages spaced out along them. On the map, the town is the densest point in this spread-out pattern.
