Ramona lies in the inland hills of San Diego County, in the broad Santa Maria Valley about forty minutes from the coast. From above, the town stretches along its main street, with residential roads branching into the surrounding land and larger rural parcels, ranches and vineyards spreading across the valley floor.
A Ramona map poster captures this open, rural pattern. A denser town centre follows the main road, while outlying areas show winding lanes and cul-de-sacs following the terrain. The valley is ringed by chaparral-covered hills and rocky ridges, and the Ramona Grasslands form a wide open space to the west of town.
The community takes its name from Ramona, the 1884 novel by Helen Hunt Jackson. The area is also home to the Ramona Valley wine region, with vineyards planted on the surrounding slopes, and it retains a strong ranching and equestrian culture. Its small airport serves as a base for aerial firefighting in the region.
