Rampachodavaram lies in the hilly Agency area of Andhra Pradesh, northwest of Rajahmundry, where the Eastern Ghats rise above the Godavari basin. On a map, the town is compact and irregular, fitted into the terrain, with roads leaving it in long curves through forest and small tribal villages.
The area is closely associated with Alluri Sitarama Raju, who led the Rampa rebellion against British rule in the early 1920s among the tribal communities of these hills. Today the town serves as an administrative and market centre for the surrounding forested region.
