Ratanpur lies north of Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, and for centuries it was the capital of the Kalachuri rulers of the region. Its map is unusual. The town is dotted with a remarkable number of ponds and tanks, and many of them are linked to old temples. The streets bend and branch around the water.
The Mahamaya Temple, dedicated to the goddess Mahamaya, is Ratanpur's best-known site and an important pilgrimage destination, especially during Navratri. Ruins, forts and smaller shrines are spread around the town, and low hills rise along its edges.
