Ratlām lies on the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, on high, gently rolling ground. From above, the old city is a close cluster of lanes and bazaars, while the areas laid out later extend outward along main roads. Several tanks and small lakes break up the pattern, and farmland surrounds the town on most sides.
The railway defines much of the map. Ratlām is one of the major junctions of the Western Railway, where lines toward Mumbai, Delhi and other parts of central India meet, and the tracks, yards and colony housing form a large, orderly district next to the older town that looks quite different from the bazaar streets.
The town is also known far beyond Madhya Pradesh for Ratlami sev, a spiced gram-flour snack, and for its gold trade. A Ratlām map poster shows the compact market core where that trade takes place alongside the long straight lines of rail that brought the town its importance.
