Rawalakot sits on a broad upland plateau in the Poonch area of Azad Kashmir, and the map shows a town shaped by its terrain. The centre is a small, fairly dense cluster of streets and bazaars, while the roads leaving it bend and switch back as they climb into the surrounding hills and forested ridges.
The town is the administrative centre of Poonch Division and serves a wide rural area of villages spread along the slopes. On paper this gives a clear hub-and-spoke pattern: one busy core, then thin lines of road following the contours outward, with small settlements strung along them like beads.
