Rāwatbhāta lies in the Chittorgarh district of southern Rajasthan, beside the deep gorge of the Chambal River. The town grew around two large engineering projects: the Rana Pratap Sagar dam, which holds back a large reservoir on the Chambal, and the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station, one of India's nuclear power plants.
The map reflects that history. Much of the town is made up of planned residential colonies for plant and project staff, with orderly roads, loops and sector-style blocks. They contrast with the older, more irregular settlement nearby. The river, the reservoir and the rocky plateau around them take up much of the frame.
