Retiro, also called El Retiro, is a town in the highlands of eastern Antioquia, a short distance south-east of Medellín. It sits in a green valley at high altitude, with hills rising on every side. Its centre follows the Spanish colonial pattern: a main square with streets set out in a grid around it.
Beyond the grid, the map turns rural very quickly. Roads climb and wind over the hills toward farms and country houses, and patches of forest cover the slopes. Part of the La Fe reservoir, which supplies water to the Medellín area, lies within the municipality and brings a large, irregular body of water into the frame.
The town is well known for its woodworking tradition and furniture makers. A Retiro map poster reflects the same care for form. It has a compact centre, curving mountain roads and a reservoir with complex shorelines, all of which translate well into fine black lines.
