Rhennouch, also written Ghannouch, lies just north of Gabès on Tunisia's south-eastern coast. On a map the town sits between the sea and inland oasis land: the shoreline of the Gulf of Gabès forms a clean eastern edge, while residential streets and palm groves spread inland, crossed by the main coastal road.
The area is best known for its large industrial zone, where phosphate is processed and shipped through a commercial port. From above these facilities appear as broad rectangular plots, jetties and sidings, a very different pattern from the fine texture of houses and garden plots. That contrast defines the place more than any single landmark.
