Ribeirão lies in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the humid coastal hinterland of northeastern Brazil that has been shaped for centuries by sugarcane. The town sits in a gently rolling landscape, and its streets follow the valley floor and the lower slopes of the surrounding hills.
On a map the centre forms a modest cluster of blocks around the main square and church, with roads leading out to neighbouring towns and the highway. Beyond the built-up area, large fields of cane cover the hills, leaving wide open spaces broken only by tracks and small watercourses.
