Río Cuarto lies in southern Córdoba province, where the pampas begin to rise towards the Sierras de Comechingones to the west. The city is named after the river that runs along its edge, also called the Chocancharava. The river's curving course and green banks make a clear boundary against the city's straight streets.
The rest of the plan is a typical Argentine grid: square blocks, central plazas and long avenues extending in every direction until they meet farmland. Río Cuarto is a service centre for one of the country's major grain and cattle regions, and roads and rail lines connect it to the surrounding estancias.
The city is also home to the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto, whose campus sits outside the centre. Locals sometimes call the city the Imperio, a reference to its old title as an imperial villa. A Río Cuarto map poster shows regular blocks and a meandering river side by side.
