Rio Tinto is a city in the municipality of Gondomar, just east of Porto, and on the map it reads as a continuation of the larger metropolitan fabric. Streets are dense and irregular, with residential blocks, older roads and newer developments packed closely together on gently hilly ground.
The city takes its name from the small Tinto river that runs through it. Local legend says the river turned red with blood after a battle between Christians and Moors, giving it the name Rio Tinto, meaning red river. Rio Tinto is served by a station on the Minho railway line, and Porto Metro Line F runs through it toward Fânzeres.
