Rivadavia lies in the eastern part of Argentina's Mendoza Province, in an oasis landscape where irrigation turns dry plains into vineyards and orchards. On a map the town is a regular grid of blocks. Beyond it spreads a larger, finer grid of cultivated parcels, lined with roads and irrigation channels running in straight lines.
The Tunuyán River passes through the area, and its water, managed through a network of canals, makes local agriculture possible. Winemaking is central to eastern Mendoza, and Rivadavia belongs to that tradition. Rows of vines reach close to the edge of the town, and farm roads link it to neighbouring communities.
