Robāţ Karīm lies on the open plain south-west of Tehran, in Tehran Province. Seen from above, it is a compact town of mostly regular blocks surrounded by fields, orchards and irrigation channels, with the capital's outer suburbs gradually drawing closer. Long, straight roads cross the landscape, and the mountains that rise behind Tehran lie far beyond the map's edge, leaving the image flat and open.
The name joins robat, an old word for a caravanserai or roadside inn, with the personal name Karim, which suggests the town began as a stopping point on a travel route. Today it is the centre of a county with a mix of agriculture, light industry and residential growth, and many of its residents commute toward Tehran.
