Rongxi lies in the southeastern corner of Chongqing, in the Wuling mountain region near the borders of Guizhou and Hunan. This is an area of limestone hills, narrow valleys and terraced fields, home to Tujia and Miao communities as well as Han Chinese. The town itself is compact, with streets drawn along the valley floor.
On a map, the terrain determines everything. Roads follow valleys and wind over passes, small rivers trace the lowest ground, and farmland fits into the spaces between hills. The built-up area is dense but small, and it quickly gives way to scattered villages and paths across the slopes.
