Rüsselsheim am Main lies on the south bank of the Main, shortly before it joins the Rhine, between Frankfurt and Mainz. On a map, the river forms the northern edge of the town, and the town centre sits close to it. Frankfurt Airport lies not far to the east, and motorways and railway lines cut through the surrounding area.
Opel has been based here since 1862, when Adam Opel started making sewing machines before the company moved on to bicycles and later cars. The large factory complex fills a big part of the map with long industrial buildings and rail sidings. Near the river, the Renaissance fortress, the Festung, sits within a green park surrounded by its old moat and bastions.
