Rugao lies in the flat country north of the Yangtze in Jiangsu, a county-level city administered by Nantong. The land is almost level and full of water, so the map is defined as much by canals, ponds and irrigation channels as by roads. The historic centre sits within loops of waterways that trace the old moats that once enclosed the walled town.
Rugao is known for Shuihui Garden, a classical garden in the old town associated with the late Ming scholar Mao Xiang, and for its own distinctive tradition of bonsai. The city also has a reputation in China for the longevity of its residents, a trait often cited in national discussions of ageing and health.
