Saarlouis was founded in 1680 as a fortress town for Louis XIV, planned by Vauban to secure France's new eastern frontier. The founding plan survives clearly on the map: a hexagonal core with a central square and a regular grid, surrounded by the traces of bastions and moats that once formed a star-shaped defensive ring.
The Saar shapes the town as strongly as the fortifications. Its river course has been straightened over time, leaving the older loop of the Alte Saar as a curved arm of water beside the centre. The contrast between the geometric fortress plan and the soft curves of old and new channels is striking from above.

The central Großer Markt, originally a parade ground, sits at the heart of the grid, and the fortress outline is still readable in streets, green spaces and remaining casemates that follow the old defensive lines.
