Sabaneta is a small town in the state of Barinas, in the Venezuelan llanos, the vast lowland plains that stretch between the Andes and the Orinoco. The land here is flat, and the town reads on a map as a neat, low-density grid with roads leading out across open ground in almost straight lines.
The town is widely known as the birthplace of Hugo Chávez, who was born here in 1954 and grew up in the area before going on to lead Venezuela. Beyond that, Sabaneta is an agricultural community, and the surrounding fields and ranch land shape the character of the place far more than any urban feature.
