Sablayan is on the western coast of Occidental Mindoro and is one of the largest municipalities in the Philippines by land area. The town centre sits close to the shore, with a modest grid of streets and a coastal road running north and south. Inland, the territory stretches across river plains and farmland toward the mountainous spine of the island.
Offshore lies Apo Reef Natural Park, one of the largest coral reef systems in the country, which falls within the municipality. Sablayan is also home to a well-known prison and penal farm, run as an open colony on a large agricultural estate.
