Saint-Jean-d'Aulps lies in the Vallée d'Aulps in the Chablais area of Haute-Savoie, along the Dranse de Morzine between Thonon-les-Bains and Morzine. The commune stretches along the valley, with the main road and the river running side by side and hamlets spread across the slopes on either side. On the map this produces a clear, linear layout, open along the valley and framed by mountains.
The village is known for the ruins of the Abbey of Aulps, a medieval Cistercian abbey whose remains now form a heritage site. Above the village, the ski area of Roc d'Enfer offers a modest, family-scaled domain, and the valley lies close to the resorts of the Portes du Soleil. The territory covers about forty square kilometres.
