Salzkotten lies in the district of Paderborn in eastern Westphalia, on the Hellweg, the historic trade route that crossed the region from the Rhine eastward. The name refers to salt, and the town owes its origins to the brine springs that were worked here for centuries. On the map, the old core is small and rounded, with streets closing in around the centre.
The little river Heder runs through town, and its course together with the railway line between Hamm and Paderborn gives the plan two clear directions. Newer residential areas spread outward in loops and cul-de-sacs, and beyond them the flat, open fields of the Hellweg Börde take over, broken by farm tracks and scattered villages.
