San Ignacio de Velasco is a town in the Chiquitania region of eastern Bolivia, in the Santa Cruz Department. It began as one of the Jesuit missions founded among the Chiquitano peoples in the eighteenth century. The mission churches of this region are celebrated for their large timber structures and painted decoration, and they still draw many visitors.
On the map, the town's origins are clear. A large central plaza forms the core, surrounded by a regular grid of streets extending outward in all directions. Around the urban area, the land opens into gently rolling savanna and forest, broken by lagoons and reservoirs. Long unpaved roads lead out toward ranches and more distant villages.
