San Miniato sits on a ridge roughly halfway between Pisa and Florence, overlooking the lower Arno valley. The old town follows the crest of the hill, so from above its streets form a long, narrow line of buildings rather than a round centre. Below, newer districts spread across the flat valley floor, including San Miniato Basso near the river.
The town's highest point is marked by a tower tied to the medieval fortress associated with Emperor Frederick II, visible for miles across the valley. San Miniato is also famous for white truffles, found in the surrounding hills and celebrated at an autumn market fair that draws visitors from across Italy.
