San Pedro de Lloc is the capital of Pacasmayo Province in the La Libertad region, near Peru's northern Pacific coast. As in many towns on this desert shore, the map shows a compact colonial-style grid surrounded by irrigated farmland, with dry, empty ground beyond the reach of the canals.
The Pan-American Highway passes by the town, and the ocean is only a short distance to the west. Irrigation channels and field boundaries make a dense pattern of fine lines around the town, and at the edge of the cultivated land that pattern suddenly gives way to open desert. This contrast is typical of coastal Peru.
