San Tan Valley lies south-east of the Phoenix metropolitan area in Pinal County, Arizona. From above, it is a pattern of master-planned subdivisions, each with its own curving streets, loops and small parks. These sit within a grid of arterial roads that follow the old section lines across the desert. The San Tan Mountains rise to the west as a rough, empty patch on the map.
Much of the community was built in the early twenty-first century on land that had been desert and farmland, and it grew rapidly as families moved out from the Phoenix area. The regional park in the San Tan Mountains offers trails through Sonoran Desert terrain close to the new neighbourhoods.
