Sangju lies in the northwest of Gyeongsangbuk-do, in a broad basin surrounded by low mountains. The city centre is small and compact, with a regular pattern of streets. Around it, rice paddies and orchards spread out in neat rectangles across the valley floor, and villages sit at the foot of the hills.
The Nakdong River, the longest river in South Korea, runs along the eastern part of the municipality. It meanders through wide floodplains, with weirs and river parks along its banks. On the Sangju map poster the river, the compact centre and the agricultural grid form a balanced composition, framed by the mountains around the edge.
Sangju is known across Korea for its dried persimmons, or gotgam, and orchards of persimmon trees are part of the landscape around the city. It is also known as a bicycle city with an unusually high rate of cycling, and there is a bicycle museum near the Nakdong River.
