Santa Ana is the seat of Orange County in Southern California, set on a flat coastal plain inland from the Pacific. The map is almost entirely grid: long straight arterials run in both directions at regular intervals, and residential blocks fill the squares between them. The Santa Ana River channel runs along the western side, and several freeways, including the I-5, cross the city.
Downtown Santa Ana keeps a compact historic core with early twentieth-century commercial buildings and the restored Old Orange County Courthouse. The Bowers Museum and the Santa Ana Zoo are well-known local institutions, and the city has one of the largest Latino communities in the region, reflected in its long-standing Fourth Street shopping district.
