Santa Catarina lies on the western side of the Monterrey metropolitan area in Nuevo León, where the plain meets the Sierra Madre Oriental. Its urban area stretches along the Santa Catarina River, a wide and usually dry riverbed that continues east through Monterrey. It forms one of the strongest lines on any map of the region.
Southwest of the centre, the mountains open into La Huasteca, a canyon with steep limestone walls. It is part of Cumbres de Monterrey National Park and popular for climbing and hiking. On a map the streets stop sharply at the foot of these ridges, so the landscape is as visible as the street grid.
