Santo Antônio do Descoberto lies in the state of Goiás, just beyond the south-western border of the Federal District. It belongs to the ring of municipalities around Brasília, and much of its growth has come from people who work in or around the capital. From above, the town appears as a patchwork of rectangular blocks laid out across the open landscape of the central Brazilian plateau.
The land here is typical cerrado country: gently rolling ground, dry grassland and scrub, with strips of darker vegetation along the valleys. The Descoberto River, which gives the town part of its name, runs through the area. Upstream, a reservoir on the same river supplies much of the Federal District with water.
