Santo Domingo is a town in Villa Clara Province in central Cuba, on the flat, open ground typical of the island's interior. The map shows a compact grid of straight streets and square blocks, a layout that reflects the Spanish colonial approach to planning towns in the Americas.
Beyond the edge of the grid, the land opens into fields crossed by rural roads and small watercourses. For generations, sugarcane and other crops have shaped the surrounding landscape, and on the map it appears as a wide, quiet area around the small, dense town.
