São Caitano is a town in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, in northeastern Brazil, the transitional zone between the humid coast and the dry sertão further inland. It lies west of Caruaru, the largest city of the Agreste. The town has a compact centre of blocks, with streets spreading outward over uneven ground and roads leaving for nearby communities and rural areas.
The surrounding landscape is semi-arid, with low hills, scrub vegetation and small farms. Water is scarce for much of the year, and reservoirs and seasonal streams are important features of the countryside. The Agreste is known for strong cultural traditions, including the São João festivities in June, celebrated across the region and especially in nearby Caruaru.
