São João is a municipality in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transitional region between the humid coast and the dry sertão of northeastern Brazil. From above, the town is compact, with a small grid of streets around its centre and a church square that anchors the layout, as is common in towns in the interior of the Northeast.
Beyond the urban area, the map spreads into a rural landscape of rolling hills, pastures and small farms. Unpaved roads run between the properties and the smaller settlements in the municipality, some following ridges, some following valleys. The land is used intensively, but the buildings are scattered, so the map feels open.
