São Leopoldo lies in the Sinos River valley, north of Porto Alegre. On a map, the Rio dos Sinos winds along the edge of the city in wide, slow loops, with low floodplain and wetlands beside it. The streets spread away from the river onto slightly higher ground.
The city has a special place in Brazilian history. German immigrants arrived here in 1824, and it is widely regarded as the cradle of German colonisation in Brazil. Today it is part of the Porto Alegre metropolitan area. Its best-known institution is Unisinos, a large university whose campus occupies a sizeable part of the map.
A São Leopoldo map poster shows the historic centre near the river, the later neighbourhoods and the railway and highways leading to Porto Alegre and Novo Hamburgo. The meandering river gives the composition its character, and the city's history adds meaning for many families in the south of Brazil.
