Sarauli lies west of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, in the Rohilkhand region of the upper Ganges plain. The land here is almost perfectly flat and intensively farmed. On a map the town is a compact, closely built centre, with roads and field tracks extending in several directions toward villages and market towns.
Wheat, sugarcane and rice dominate the surrounding countryside, and canals and drainage channels are common in this part of the plain. The fields are divided into small plots, so the landscape around Sarauli has a fine, irregular texture on the map, broken by clusters of villages and the occasional pond.
