Sartrouville lies in the Yvelines department, north-west of Paris, on the inside of one of the Seine's great loops. From above, the river is the defining feature. It forms the town's western and northern edges in a wide curve, with Maisons-Laffitte and its forest on the opposite bank. Inside the loop, streets form a patchwork of residential neighbourhoods, some winding and some gridded.
The town grew from a riverside village into a large suburb as the railway brought Paris within easy reach. Today the RER and suburban lines cross it, and the station areas act as local centres. Low houses, larger apartment estates and green spaces sit side by side, while embankments and bridges mark the connections across the river.
