Sassuolo sits where the flat Emilian plain meets the first slopes of the Apennines, with the Secchia river running along its western side. The historic centre is small and dense, and newer districts spread out around it in a looser grid, broken up by large industrial areas.
At the heart of the town stands the Palazzo Ducale, once a summer residence of the Este family. On a map, the palace and its grounds make a distinct open block among the old streets, and the axis leading to it is still one of the clearest lines in the centre.
Sassuolo is known worldwide as the centre of the Italian ceramic tile industry, and many of the large rectangular blocks on its outskirts are factories and warehouses.
