Sathupalli lies in Khammam district in southeastern Telangana, close to the border with Andhra Pradesh. The town has a compact centre. Its streets gather around the main roads that meet here, and the built-up area thins out into fields, tanks and scattered villages on all sides.
The area around Sathupalli is part of the Godavari valley coal belt, and open-cast mining has changed parts of the landscape. On a map, mine areas show up as large irregular shapes with haul roads leading to them. Their outlines contrast sharply with the fine pattern of farm plots and irrigation tanks in the surrounding countryside.
