Sattur is a town in Virudhunagar district, in southern Tamil Nadu, on the flat, dry plain between Madurai and Tirunelveli. The Vaippar river passes the town, and for much of the year its broad sandy bed is a pale band on the map rather than flowing water. The main highway to the south runs close by and gives the plan a firm north–south line.
The town is part of the industrial belt around Sivakasi, and matches, fireworks and printing have long employed people here. Sattur is also known across Tamil Nadu for its kara sev, a crisp, peppery snack sold under the town's name. On the map, the old centre forms a dense knot of streets, with newer extensions stretching along the main roads.
