Selb lies in Upper Franconia, in the far northeast of Bavaria, a few kilometres from the Czech border. From above, the town fills a gentle valley. Its older streets gather around the centre, and later residential districts spread up the surrounding slopes. Forest presses in on almost every side, so the built-up area has a clear, irregular outline.
Selb is best known for porcelain. Rosenthal and Hutschenreuther are tied to the town, and the Porzellanikon museum documents that industrial heritage. On the map, the factory era shows up as larger blocks and rail-side sites set among the finer residential grain.
