Serra Negra lies in the hills of northeastern São Paulo state, near the border with Minas Gerais, and is one of the towns of the Circuito das Águas Paulista, known for mineral springs. It has long been a destination for weekend visitors from the city of São Paulo, drawn by cooler air, spring water and the surrounding countryside.
The map is shaped by relief. Streets rarely run straight for long; they bend with the contours, climb ridges and drop into small valleys, so the town forms an irregular, organic outline. The historic centre is the densest part, with a church square and commercial streets, while residential areas spread outward along hillsides and roads leading into the rural surroundings.
Beyond the town, farms, pastures and patches of forest cover the hills, and small roads link scattered properties and neighbouring towns.
