Serro Map Poster
Serro grew up in the eighteenth century during the gold rush of Minas Gerais, when it was known as Vila do Príncipe. Its streets were laid out by the terrain rather than a plan, so from above they twist along hillsides, drop into valleys and meet at small squares in front of churches.
The historic centre was among the first urban ensembles in Brazil to receive federal heritage protection, in 1938. The town is also known across the country for Queijo do Serro, a traditional cheese made in the surrounding countryside and recognised as part of Brazil's cultural heritage.
A Serro map poster traces this irregular fabric in fine detail. Narrow lanes follow the contours, a few longer roads run between the hills, and the surrounding landscape of the Espinhaço highlands frames the town in a pattern of winding rural routes.
