Settimo Torinese lies just north-east of Turin, on the flat plain along the Po. The name comes from its position at the seventh Roman milestone on the road out of Turin, and its roads still define it. On a map, a historic core sits among later housing, while motorways, railway lines and large industrial plots frame the town on several sides.
Settimo grew quickly in the twentieth century as an industrial suburb, taking in workers and factories tied to Turin's manufacturing economy. The result is a mix of scales that shows clearly from above: small streets near the old centre, broad blocks of apartment buildings, and the long, rectangular footprints of plants and warehouses beyond them.
