Severomorsk lies on the eastern shore of the Kola Bay, north of Murmansk, well above the Arctic Circle. The terrain dominates its map. The bay forms a long, deep inlet on one side, and the town climbs from the shore over rocky ground. Small lakes lie in the hollows, and the streets curve to fit between hills instead of following a regular grid.
The town is the main base of Russia's Northern Fleet, and its history is closely tied to the navy. It is a closed administrative territory, which means access for outsiders is restricted. For those who live there, it is a compact town with its own centre, embankment and memorials, facing the water.
