Shangmei is the seat of Xinhua County in central Hunan Province, China. The town lies along the Zi River, one of the main rivers of Hunan, in a region of hills and valleys. Xinhua County is known in the region for its landscape of mountains and terraced fields, and the town serves as its administrative and commercial centre.
From above, Shangmei follows the river. The dense core of streets and blocks lies along the Zi, with bridges connecting the banks. The town has grown outward in recent decades, adding newer districts with broader roads and larger blocks alongside the older, tighter streets near the water.
